Acne Facts

Are all of these products the same?

They look and smell different and they are endorsed by different celebrities, some are expensive and some are not, but what really make some work better?  It all comes down to what is in them!  This is what you pay for, or at least should be.  A truly great acne treatment needs to have ingredients that treat acne in many ways.  Some ingredients work together and can offer real and long-term results.

Are natural ingredients effective?

In general they are.  However a lot of natural acne ingredients work in conjunction with or help to improve the results you see from treating acne along with scientific ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide.  For example, sage extract alone will do little to clear blemishes, but it works amazingly to help calm redness and help to heal the skin.

What is the best treatment type for me?

There are a lot of options on the market.  How about looking into prescription medications such as Accutane?  Are the side-effects worth it? Topical Treatments can be effective and provide acne sufferers with clear and healthy skin without taking harsh medications.   Be sure to choose the best products for your skin type.  There are a lot of systems out there that are not any better than just washing your face for helping your acne. However, consistently using a regimen of high quality products can treat even surprisingly stubborn cases of acne.  Check out the acne chart.  It gives you a high-level analysis of some of the most important ingredients.

When will I my Acne clear up?

This is one of the most often asked questions.  Everyone wants their acne to clear up immediately, but the process can take time.  Of course the process varies for every person, but in general high-quality systems that use Benzoyl peroxide and other actives can offer results in as little as two weeks.  Systems that use only salicylic acid generally take longer to work, and are really only recommended for mild cases of acne.   So be patient and take your time.  Follow the treatment instructions closely and you should see good and lasting results!

Don't I just need to wash my face?

Actually washing too often might make it worse!  Washing with a gentle acne cleanser once or twice a day should do it.  Some cleansers are over drying and can irritate already inflamed skin causing acne breakouts.  Remember acne is not caused by dirty skin.  It is important to use a light cleanser that is designed for acne prone skin types.  (For reviews, information and product info click here).  Also look for cleansers that don¹t contain irritants!

Does stress cause breakouts?

Stress may have an effect on hormones and therefore might lead to increased acne breakouts. However, remember that an effective acne solution can far outweigh the effects of even the most stressful day. We all want to limit stress and its effects, but in general it doesn't¹t contribute much with your acne.

Can sex cause acne?

This is an old wives tale with little if no basis of truth.  The idea is dated and is completely nonsense.  See the information on Life Style Tips for other things you can start doing now to help calm your acne... sex isn't one of them!

Will tanning help get rid of my acne?

Initially it might help somewhat and hide redness, however the sun can lead to irritation and can making acne worse.  Some people will notice that they breakout when they start to heal from sun burns, but remember that limited sun exposure is not a bad thing, however we recommend limiting the sun exposure on acne prone areas, especially those you are treating!
